Batley Girls’ High School had an immediate and pressing need for an additional five English teaching classrooms and two Science teaching laboratories. The school did not have enough space to teach these core subjects and were being forced to teach in other parts of the school away from their respective departments.
MPH Building Systems provided a full turn key package to install two purpose built modular buildings on the school site. The turn key package included pre-construction services consisting of a full planning application, ground condition investigation, foundation designs, CCTV drainage surveys and full contractor’s design. The construction phase included the design, supply, delivery and installation of the modular units with site clearance, foundations, incoming services, drainage and landscaping.
The 400m2 English Block included five 60m2 classrooms with offices and circulation space all linked to the main school with a traditionally built glazed structure. In addition, existing school services including fire alarms, intruder alarms and data were all integrated into the existing site wide systems. Internally, folding acoustic partitions were installed to open up teaching spaces to provide flexibility for large activities and exam areas. The 230m2 science classroom included two 90m2 fully fitted science labs, prep room and a lobby. Two different science lab layouts were designed to meet the individual needs of the school. The science lab fit out included gas detection proofing systems and carbon monoxide monitoring to comply with the safe use of gas in educational buildings.
As the new science block was remote to the existing school building, a covered walkway was constructed to protect students from inclement weather during class change. Mechanical and electrical installations included air source heat pumps as the mode of space heating, energy efficient water heaters, and an LED lighting scheme with controls. The M&E installation and insulated building fabric complied with Part L of the Building Regulations providing a highly energy efficient building and reduced running costs.
